Not the idea, but the type we have is. It employs some Iroquois ideas as well, something the Greeks didn't know about. The Six Nations were and are democratic as well, and there's a lot of influence from them. That's why our democracy isn't really the same as the Greek type if you look at it. The Greeks had social classes, whereas the Six Nations didn't discriminate by social class--that was unheard of in Europe and a novel idea to the settlers. The American type of democracy is a mixture of Greek and Native ideas. It's that Native influence that also explains why we aren't so rigid when it comes to class, like many European countries are.

Democracy began in Ancient Greece where all the male citizens over the age of 20 had the opportunity to vote. Unlike the United State's democracy, Ancient Greece had a "Direct Democracy" where every vote is tallied and counted, rather than our "Representative Democracy" where we vote for people and then they vote for us. No, Ancient Greece was the first to have democracy. And only certain city states had democracy, like Athens.

No. The Greeks had a form of democracy over 2000 years ago (the "dem" in "democracy" comes from the Greek for "deme" which means "people"). Before that, simple tribal groups often decided important issues by preponderance of opinion, particularly before there was a "state."
