Does lighting a match remove the gas smell or just mask it?

Using a lighter doesn't work but the match always does the trick even though everyone knows what you were up to.

Just masks it. Was on a episode of mythbusters. The idea was the flame burned up the methane or the smoke particulates bonded with the gasses. both were wrong just masks the odor.

It just masks the smell with a smoke smell.

would be best to do that outside, I think. Methane does have an explosive quality to it, you'd hate to singe your clothes.
