We stepped back from the brink of nuclear war with the following deal: The USSR would lose face by backing down and removing their missiles from Cuba, and we would later, quietly, remove ours from Turkey. I think it was a good deal.

The deal did NOT include "we won't obliterate you from the planet". Thankfully cooler heads prevailed, since obliterating them would have resulted in our obliteration as well.

The agreement was that if the Russians removed their missiles from Cuba, the US wouldn't nuke them.
