No, I would just expect that he is either working right now, or going to/getting out of work.
I really don't see too many men walking around with suits on all day my age range.
A lot of "poorly" dressed men just like to be casual, but are also big career men and don't show it outside the office (or sometimes do show it at the office because they own their company or dress code is relaxed)

Not always. In the university where I work, there is a Rhodes Scholar who once managed 4 large and very different organizations at once. One was the entire campus library system, one was the campus radio and TV stations, and 2 were two large but separate IT installations. He was capable of delivering a 30 minute talk on any of these - without preparation or advance notice - at almost any time. None of these pertain to the field that he got his degrees in. Oh, he has since been promoted to a higher job with even more authority.

But he dresses in what looks to me like an ill-fitting off the rack suit, often wearing a shirt that looks like it's about 1 size too big. In my opinion, the man is brilliant, and clothes are just not something that he's really to concerned about.

My recommendation - ignore the clothes, and look at what the person has done, and is doing.

The suit shouldn't make the difference since you're still the same man... however, in this world, image is really important. My wife works in a big 6 firm and everything about image matters - the suit, the brand, the cufflinks, the personalized shirt cuffs, custom shirts, the whole nine yards and it works because they interact with the wealthiest people day in and day out. If you're ever not sure if this works, put your suit on and walk into a mall and see how many salespeople run to help you. It will prove your point.

Depends on the setting that the suit is worn. If it's worn for an inappropriate occasion like a casual party or grocery shopping, than no. If it's a wedding, funeral, special occasion, or professional job setting, than yes. Every man should have a nice suit for the appropriate occasions. I don't know that it shows you are more important, but it makes a man feel self-confident and shows that you are respectful to the people that have put together an occasion. If you are a professional than you always need to be wearing one to show clients and coworkers that you believe in success.

No i dont think so, this aplies to anyone . The clothes that you were yes do give you a first inpreshion but wearing a flash suit and nice shoes dosnt make that person more of a man that what someone walking down the street in joggers and a t-shirt he could be more reliable pleasnt and a nicer than any other man i dont think a man wearing a shirt would make any differance than one wearing any old thing x

The suit gives a person an air of importance and authority
it's just an illusion, it doesn't make someone a better person.

People who dress like a slob are treated differently
buisnesses watch them as if they're going to steal something and they dont expect the person to have any money, but that's just perception which goes a long way.

Unfortunately in life, image counts in certain places including offices. The tradition of wearing suits has been on-going for long now and so people wearing suits tend to be taken seriously - since wearing a suit in itself makes a statement. You are formally dressed and so people treat you formally.

When's the last time you saw members of congress in flip flops or actors going to the oscars in t-shirts, or couples wedding in baseball hats?

People who dress well are often taken more seriously -- but that does not make them more important.

When I see them as strangers on the street, yes. When I am Volunteering at the hospital lobby desk, I assume they are just pharmaceutical reps and not so important. When I go out in the evening, I do love to see a man in a white shirt and tie.

My boyfriend wears a suit to work, but likes a tee shirt, shorts and sandals when he is not working. So, he can look important at work, but the real him is laid back. So people can be important and not look like it.
PS He is a lawyer.

I think that other people think so, but personally appearances don't have a great effect on me. If you walk into a restaurant in a business suit, you'll probably be treated very well. If you walk into a restaurant in smelly, dirty, torn up t-shirt and jeans you most likely will not.
