They don't eat them, but sometimes a sock will go over the top of the barrel, and get stuck between the barrel and the outside frame.

This is often said of both washers and driers when unmatched socks are found at the end of the cycle. In reality, it probably more of a case of losing the sock(s) on the way TO the washer or dryer. (These are mechanical monster and usually don't get hungry enough to eat much besides small dogs and young children)

No, it is more likely the bleach you add into the wash. Or the socks just gets lost some where.
If you ever move you'll find all the lost socks!! I know I did.

nope, they can get sucked between the drums if overloaded, and then seize the inner drum and break the belt, or get sucked into the pump/filter, but the "one sock syndrome" is mainly caused by people come home drunk and throwing their cloths off without putting them in the wash basket properly, Of course I'm blame the Mrs, she should make sure they are all paired up : -)

Yes they do eat socks,well they don't actually chew them up it's just a gateway to sock land,where opposites attract and they can live free from the fear of feet ;)

If you fill your machine too full it can push the socks over the barrell where you can't get to them.

No its not true! Its the Borrowers that pinch them along with the mutitude of other things that go missing in our homes. Why they want smelly ones I dont know but they take them as well as the clean ones!
