Cookies are just small .txt (text) files that by themselves cannot hurt your computer. They are not a virus, but some people consider "tracking" cookies to be an invasion of privacy.

It all depends on one's level of paranoria.

Tracking cookies are mostly "3rd party cookies" from advertising servers. They can track your movements around the web in order to deliver to you customised, targeted advertising.

If you are using Internet Explorer for a browser, you can permanantly block all 3rd party cookies. Go to tools > internet options > privacy > advanced > checkmark "override automatic cookie handling" > third party cookies > tick "block" > ok > ok.

Cookie is a very small text file placed on your hard drive by a Web Page server. It is essentially your identification card, and cannot be executed as code or deliver viruses. It is uniquely yours and can only be read by the server that gave it to you.

A Cookie's Purpose is:
To tell the server that you returned to that Web page.

Hey
Yes it contains data of the sites you visit and and where you login and register , you must also be carefully because if your cookies files fall into the wrong hand then they might be able to get your passwords of the sites that are stored (note:The cookie files also contain the user names and passwords of some site you use and which are stored to remember automatically.

Best Wishes

Chulan

Mmmmm...cookies...no really, cookies are temp. internet files, which allow web pages to load faster if you've already been to them. You can clear out the cookies under Tools- Internet Options if you need to, though they usually don't take too much space.
