If by nanny you mean that there are police to protect you from thieves and bullies, both white and blue collar?

If by nanny you mean that there is economic security to protect people from worst outcomes.

If by nanny you mean that there is free education for every person so they can be the most productive member of society possible.

If by nanny you mean that there is medical security, that you don't have to be rich to survive common illnesses.

If by nanny you mean that there is a real judicial system, that levels the playing field, and forces people to play honestly with each other.

If by nanny you mean that there is all the other things that make life the best possible for the largest number of people.

Unfortunately I don't thing so.

If by nanny you mean that some busybody tells you precisely what you can do with your own body, who you can have sex with and how, and what thoughts are allowed and which are not, that seems a lot more likely

Who is "we"? If you mean the USA, there has been a strong retreat on social services for the pastr quarter century. Where have you been?

I think rather than a nanny state, we are getting a Clergy State. Meaning control over people's private behavior, particularly in the bedroom, plus getting preached at all the time. That's what the Religious Right wants.

If Nanny is Big Brother then yes we are! We put one wrong thing in our recycling box and it wasn't emptied, instead there was a printed note from big brother saying that we had placed a wrong item in the box so it wouldn't be emptied. Speed cameras are everywhere and clock everybody but the boy racers who pass me frequently with rubber burning! Inadvertently park in the wrong place and that's another 30 quid and appealing gets you nowhere. It's quite clever really isn't it, create a nanny state, make rules the children can't adhere to, then charge them to pay for the state!

yes. just look at the trans-fat banning in New York. ridiculous. if i wanna clog my arteries, why can't i? if someone doesn't want to eat something fried in whatever, they can just eat somewhere else! ARGH!

but the thing that made me maddest was the ban on smoking in cars. what i paid for my car myself, and now i can't smoke in it? (i can't even remember where this was, but dammit they did it, so it's bound to spread.)
