I live in Tennessee and my heather Calluna has of course died or looks like it is. Do I dig it up or wait for it to perk up in the spring or should I just cut it back.

It is a perennial where I am. You want to be sure it gets enough water the first year or so and that the drainage is good. There may be some life in it, but if it looks totally dead, scratch a branch and see if there is any green hiding in there. If there are signs of life tirm it back a bit after you are done having hard frosts. It is evergreen in my climate, find out what zone you are in and if it is supposed to be perennial in that zone.

Heather is a perennial in warmer climates but in your are it may not be. I would wait for Spring and see if it comes back. If not you can replace it then.
