let them talk.. let them give you the whole kit and caboodle.. ask questions..are there any other packages, etc... then at the end tell them you're very sorry but you are not interested. telemarketers need to sell a certain amount of crap a day, so if you have them going for 30 minutes and then don't buy anything,, they'll take you off their list !! Because that's when people are at home.
Get caller I.D. and voice messaging if you don't already have it, and just don't pick up if you don't recognize the number. Anyone you know will leave a message and you can call right back. Get on the "do not call list" it takes a month or more for it to stop, and some will still get through. Charities don't have to go by the don't call list, because they aren't selling. If you have the persistent ones, like the ones that leave long recorded messages, call their company back and tell them "I am recording this conversation, my number is (whatever) do not call my number again, or I will contact (name of your state attorney general). Do you need me to repeat my number before I hang up?" this works even if you aren't really recording the call. They can be fined thousands of dollars for harrassing you after being told to stop calling. this does not apply to anyone you owe money to, though.
You can also get a new phone number, request one that was previously unpublished, and have it unpublished. Make sure you request unpublished, that's where the "lists" come from in the first place. The difference between unpublished and unlisted, is you can be listed, which means people who know you can still call information and get your number but it is not published in books that can be bought by companies.

Well, they usually call around supper time or late at night becasue they know that most people are usually home at that time. If it is someone that is trying to sell you something and they totally butcher your last name, just tell them that no one by that name lives there. You can also tell them to take you off of their list. Put your number on the no call list, but remember, non-profit organizations are exempt from this and will still be able to call your number.

I have noticed that if you tell them that no one by that name lives at your home if they butcher your last name, they usually stop calling but not all the time. I acutally took a call when I worked at a nursing home that was called Oakwood Villa and the telephone company called and was looking for a Mr. or Mrs. Villa(pronounced like Bob Villa's name.) It was pretty funny! Residents there actually recieved calls a lot from a company trying to sell them windows. C'mon, like an 80 yr. old person in a nursing home really needs new windows.

They call at that time because they're quite sure you'll be home to answer the phone.

In the states we have a national do not call list. If such a thing exists in Canada, be sure to register your phone number and you'll find that you won't be getting the calls like before...better not or the callers could be fined! If you don't have such a thing available to you, reverse tactics and try to sell them something. That's worked for us in the past....start asking them lots of questions......just put the phone down and go do something else. That's fun!

If I'm doing something like watching tv or cooking, I like to let them talk. I answer their questions, like when they say "In order to start your account I need to ask you a few questions. Is it ok if my supervisor listens?" I say yes and answer the questions. But when they say they need a credit card or something to complete the sale, I say that I never agreed to buy anything, just to answer their questions. I figure I'm doing a service by keeping them occupied so they can't call someone else.

If I don't have time to do that, I ask to speak to their supervisor, and then tell them to put me on their do-not-call list AND to send me a hard-copy confirmation. This actually costs them money.

Also, it looks like Canada has a voluntary do-not-call list and will institute a national do-not-call list sometime this year. See below:

LOL.....If they are male callers I usually tell them that their voice is really sexy and it is making me hot and would they please talk dirty to me while I "Pleasure" myself. That usually discourages even the most hardcore telemarketers! If they are female I talk to them in a kinda "Boomhower"(From King of the hill) type voice that gets rid of them too! enjoy the free entertainment that they can provide!!!
