im an 18 year old guy - i weigh 70kgs and have put on about 12kgs in the last 4 months or so, from lifting weights and eating lots. i lift weights once a week - doing 6-10 reps a set, 3 sets an exercise, and 8 exercises a session. my muscles take anything from 3 - 5 days to recover, mainly depending on how much i sleep, also depending on how much good food i eat. anyway, im going to africa soon for 7 weeks, and im not sure how easy it will be for me to work out while im there - im gunna be camping a lot! in my experience ive been able to just about maintain the same level of strength and muscle mass working out every 2 weeks.so i wanted to know how long it takes for you to start losing muscle mass youve put on? and how often ill have to work out to keep the same level of muscle? (not necessarily to keep gaining muscle.)
thanks very much

Well, after a period of inactivity lasting roughly 2 weeks, you will begin to see a loss in strength and possibly even muscle mass. This is easy to avoid, even while camping in Africa. The push-up is one of your best friends. They're easy to do, don't require any equipment, and don't take up much space. Crunches will keep your abs in shape, while running should keep your legs golden.

Depends on the person. I myself personally cant work out once a week and continure gaining. 24 lbs. in 4 months sounds like you may be putting on some extra weight that isnt just muscle. When you start working out you will make great gains for the first 6 months or so then you will reach a peak and gains will come slower. That is one reason so many people stop working out they get frustrated with the slow gains after a while. Keep at it. If youre going to Africa Im not sure how you will get to gyms if youre going to be camping a lot. Best thing I would do to keep in shape for a workout. Do pushups when you wake up in the morning first thing. Then do just wall squats 20 should be good. Then do pushups again that night 25 should do the trick. Do this at least three hours before bed. Every other day. Im sure youll get some running and swimming here and there. This will be a good chance to change up your routine and get some cross training in. Who knows you may just find something here to add to your training when you get home. Have a great trip and stay safe.

you won't lose hardly any muscle. at first you might see a slight loss in weight, 5-10 lbs. this is mainly from a reduction in intramuscular cellular hydration. when you cease resistance training skeletal muscle will store less glycogen. this will cause the muscles to appear less full.

if you keep your diet clean and with sufficient calories you shouldn't see a measurable loss in lean body mass from such a short time off from training
