Where's the problem here?

3 friends go to a restaurant to eat. When they are done, they get a bill for 27 dollars. They each give the waiter 10 dollars for a total of 30 dollars.

Since the waiter knows that these friends like to argue, he decides to give each person an equal amount of the change. So he gives each person 1 dollar and he keeps 2.

So, if each friend got 1 dollar back, then they spent 9 dollars each.

Therefore 9 x 3 = 27.

And the waiter kept 2 dollars.

Therefore 27 + 2 = 29.

29 dollars???? Where did 1 dollar go?

You are adding when you should be subtracting, and vice versa.

Each man paid $9, for a total of $27 to the restaurant. The restaurant owner got $25, and the waiter got $2 for a total of $27.

P.S. The bill should've been $25, and not $27 in the first sentence of your problem.

This is an old,old problem that incredibly seems to reappear about once a month. Unfortunately, you did not even state it correctly this time around. If the bill was $27,00 and each person gave the waiter $10.00 and the waiter gives each person back $1.00 in change, then everything is fine. The waiter did not have any $2.00 to keep!! The question should be "Where did the $2.00 come from?"

If you had stated they got a bill for $25.00, not $27.00. It's not amazing that only one other person caught this mistake. It's because the problem is so old and the answer is so well known, that most people automatically assume the question was properly stated and just as automatically give the correct answer to to an incorrectly ststed problem.

the waiter can't keep the 2 dollar. he get's 30 so he has to return 3 dollar, 1 dollar for each friend.

maybe the 3 friends left 2 dollar at the end as a tip

The "Keeps 2" is extra meaningless information.

The waiter received $30. He gives $3 back. (So, he now has $27 and the patrons each paid $9.)

I think your problem is written wrong. If the bill is $25 then it works out fine.
