I'm gonna have to go with the Cubs. Not just because I'm a Cubs fan, its because with Piniella has manager, Soriano, more pitchers, D-Lee will be back.

For me it's the Mets coming out of the National League.

If they can piece together a healthy rotation behind their dynamic offense they are untouchable. I think Oliver Perez will finally come around to be the Ace he can be. John Maine will continue to make strides. Glavine will produce. El Duque will have about 15 lights-out starts, 10 mediocre starts and 5 that are so abysmal you have to turn off the tv. Pedro should return at midseason and hopefully jump right into Pedro-mode. Jorge Sosa could turn out to be surprise candidate if Rick Peterson can work his magic. The team has a plethora of young arms and old arms all thrown together and I think they'll find the right combination to bring the Mets to the Series in 2007.

In the AL things are a bit murkier. The Yankees and Red Sox seem pretty even on paper when you figure the offensive advantage the Yanks have is cancelled out by the pitching advantage the Sox have. I'd expect both teams (barring the signing of Roger Clemens) to contend until the final weeks of the season.

The Angels have a solid, healthy rotation and a, albeit slightly, improved offensive attack, but I think the team lacks the gusto to outlast any of the competition in the Central or East.

The Tigers have primarily the same team that made it to the World Series, except that they added one of the most explosive offensive machines in baseball in the form of Gary Sheffield. Expect the Tigers--assuming they don't regress this season as the Indians did last year.

The White Sox, although still a strong club, made some eye-brow raising moves by trading away two solid starters for a basketfull of young arms. The club hasn't made any solid acquisitions to improve where the team was weak last season, but anything can happen, so the White Sox still have to be in the mix.

The Twins return pretty much the same roster as they had during their incredible 2006 run, but lack two of the arms that got them to the playoffs in Liriano and Radke. The signing of Sidney Ponson was a last-ditch effort of the lowest kind. Unless Ponson has suddenly dropped 100 pounds, quit drinking and decided to focus on pitching again this can only be considered a sign that all options had been exhausted for the Twins. The rotation could, in theory, consist of Santana, Silva, Bonser, Garza and any one of Perkins, Baker or another arm from the system. Yikes!

Needless to say the American League leaves a bit of a question mark with no clear-cut team that stands hand and shoulders above the rest, but I personally can't wait for this season to get started. I've been counting down the days since the end of the October Classic.

Even though I'm a Pirates fan, I wish they would at least make the playoffs, but if I would have to pick an early favorite, I would have to say the Yankees. Money talks and they always have plenty of it to spend.

I think this year the Mets are a strong candidate. It's my favorite. They have increased their performance for 2 consecutive years, and made the playoffs last season. I think this is the Mets' year.
