Since it's not suppose to be European, why not the American Civil War. During the 1800's religious committment and feeling were high in the moral standings of most people in both the north and in the south. Some people who come to mind are Andrew (Stonewall) Jackson (accidently killed by his own men before the end of the war, and often sited as one reason the South lost), George Custard (youngest general in the war, egotistical as only the young can be, and killed by his own foolish pride in himself), Robert E Lee (lead the South, army was always outnumbered by the north, but he almost pulled off the war-- was head of the Marines that caught John Brown at Harpers Ferry, one of the triggers of the fighting). Josha Chamberland (Teacher turned soldier, hero at Gettysburg--deserved?? maybe, maybe not)

Just a few, you can also consider some of the many women of the war, spies, nurses (who also worked as doctors) Dorthea Dix, and Clara Burton come to mind, or those who dressed as men and fought next to their husbands, sons, and brothers on both sides... or those who went onto the battle fields and took food and water, as well as ammo to the soldiers. They served in a very dangerious capacity.
