NON GOVERNMENT ORGANISATION.
A NGO is a registered society doing work in the social welfare field. The members are dedicated to their work, working long hours and take a very small profit. The funding comes from the Government and different Private Foundations in the world.
They do selfless work in many fields, eg rehabilitation in Tsunami villages, Medical Camps in rural areas, helping earthquake victims, Counselling women and children in distress, adult literacy, awareness programs in health, hygiene,Sanitation, Nutrition, pre natal post natal care. Prevention of AIDS programs , legal literacy, Micro- credit Linkages between the below poverty line women to Banks. Marketing of the products of rural population.Teaching English to non- English students, Imparting training in skills where the youth can become employable,
NGOs may have varied activities. there are NGOs which concentrate only on Tribal issues, and some on Child Right issues while some on Disabled people. Some on education and some on health care.
They are also pillars of strength for the Government as they form the link between the people who cannot reach the Government and the Government itself. They do so much work in the micro field which is difficult for the Government to do, as they operate in remote areas and rural areas. They deal with the people on one to one basis.
They help to build good communities.

Non-Governmental Organization. And just to add spice to the pot, there is also a QANGO, or QuANGO. This is a Quasi Autonomous Non-Governmental Organisation. It was used a great deal in the 70s and 80s, but I haven't heard of it lately.
