Easy answer to that. Throw stuff away or donate to Salvation Army, Goodwill, churches.
If you are a busy person with not much time for that you will have to schedule your cleanup once a week. Throw out mail that you don't need and magazines present a lot of clutter. Tear out top page of cataloges for future use and throw the rest of it away. Put them in a looseleaf or file and when you need something ask them to send a catalog or go to internet catalog. I usually tag pages to read or keep and throw out the rest, makes the pile go down faster. Shoes, have a box in the garage and make them take them off there before coming in house. When you buy a knick nack, get rid of one you already have and are not particularly interested in anymore and replace it with the one you like. Easy stuff to declutter.

throw out or donate anything you have not used in one year. as for decorations and nick knacks, take a look at everything and find the stuff that is excessive, 10 candles, 15 photos of the same people, pick a few of your favorites and put the rest away. when all else fails, enlist the help of some good friends. my house was out of hand, not dirty or messy, just cluttered so 4 friends came over and helped out, 6 months later it is still in great shape and i now know when i am slipping back into my old ways and can correct it easily. good luck

Start just a little section at a time and realistically look at what you need and what you dont need- get rid of the things that are not needed- If you focus on a small section once a day and continue to do this eventually the clutter will be gone.

everything should have a place to go first.
Wicker baskets are great for storing things in.
I have a basket by the door filled with mitts and hats, one with magazines, if you have books around like I do invest in a book shelf. Clothes should be in hampers, and jackets on hooks.
Toys are a big problem too, get some clear bins and store them under kids beds.
Good luck, but once your organized you will feel better
