Why are you posting in the math section?

"Mendicancy" is a religious philosophy that says that one should not own anything but should rely entirely on the kindness of others and the grace of God in order to survive.

Mendicants took a vow of poverty, and beg for help from their neighbors. This is why the word, in lower-case, now is just a fancy word for beggar.

Since you asked about "history" rather than a definition, I thought perhaps a description of why the word means what it does was more appropriate than a simple definition.

This is one of those questions where a web search would really pay off.

'mendicancy' is begging, and there are several cultures where begging has a long history. The history isn't exactly "honorable" but there are cultures where begging isn't considered "odd." Indeed, there was a time in the history of Europe where religious "begging" --the so-called mendicants-- was not uncommon.

None of this to say that beggars are liked or appreciated, but rather to say there was a place for begging and beggars.
