I am so sick of having to recognize MLK JR. If we had a holiday devoted to a white man/woman we would be racist...and President's Day doesn't count. When and if we have a black President he would be included in that holiday. There is the BET channel too! I can imagine the fallout if there came to be a WET channel. The black community speaks of retrobution and equality, but all I see is seperation. African Americans seem to be the most racist community today. The only thing this "holiday" has done is give African Americans another chance to spread even more racism.

I am not disputing that MLK was a great man, but there were alot of men in history that were equally as great. They don't have a holiday, and it is a shame. The black community has a whole freaking month devoted to them, so they can talk about MLK then.

To be honest, I could care less what went on a hundred years ago. There is more violence today, and most of it is because of the black community. That is a statistical fact. I am so sick of hearing how the blacks should be catered to because long ago...way before I gave a s**t...their forefathers were enslaved. Get over it. Unless you are currently being enslaved, then you have no b***h.

I think overall we just live in a racist society. We will probably never get passed it. Which is really sad. There will always be someone holding onto a grudge that isn't theres. But I get what you mean. I don't necessarily agree with the anti-MLK Jr, I think that we should celebrate it. He was a great and intelligent man that helped us take a step in the right direction. But on a whole the African American population seems to be taking over. I don't think there should be strictly black channels. BET, MTVJ (

Am I wrong in assuming that your real issue is not really that MLK is recognized with a holiday, but that black Americans want special treatment, or separate treatment?
Martin Luther King was a great man, and he had the right idea. All he wanted was for all of us to be treated the same. I believe he should be honored for that contribution to our society, because black Americans were NOT treated the same as white Americans then.
There are some places where black Americans are still not treated the same as white Americans, so the issue should not be allowed to die. What better way to keep it in the forefront of todays issues than through remembering the father of the Civil Rights Movement.
But I get what you mean about BET and such things, which are solely dedicated to "black culture". I don't really understand where this "culture" came from, because it wasn't Dr. King. I believe he would have been appalled at the way his vision has been warped. The kind of "culture" as depicted on MTV and BET is very often the antithesis of the progress Dr. King wanted for black Americans.
We can only hope that there will be a new leader in the black community that will remember MLK's vision, and lead those who have gone astray back to reality. That reality is that not everyone gets to be a dancer on videos, or a rapper riding around in limos, so you better gel with society.

I'm not going to respond to much of what you said except for the not wanting to recognize MLK Jr day. Prejudice didn't end when slavery ended. Blacks were looked down upon for a LOOONG time and if you were a white girl dating a black man, you had no place in this world. Blacks were treated not only with contempt and emotionally harrassed but they were also viciously beaten by "civilized" people of society. By the people you look at as our protectors. Crap like that still goes on today but it is not nearly as bad because of Martin Luther King Jr. A Christian man who fought a battle without violence and without hate. He taught love and compassion. He brought all kinds of people together for one cause and he showed them how to do it without being animals, which is how the majority of white people were acting. Honestly, I would like to see more togetherness between white and black communities now, but do us all a favor and learn something from Martin Luther King. Be compassionate, be a friend, show love. You'll get a lot farther than you would with this angry post.
Edit: Thanks Debbie for saying what I forgot to say. Everyone seems to be in this "us vs. them" mentality. Christians, atheists, blacks, whites, old, young, and everything in between. It's ridiculous and it has to stop. No one is getting anywhere with this mentality.

I'm an Australian, so I might be a bit ignorant of all the factors about how Americans celebrate MLK day, but.... Having studied his life, I think now more than ever we should be celebrating what MLK stood for - cutting down prejudice, whether it be colour, religion, gender etc etc. If you see this as only a race issue, then sure, there are going to be tensions, but if you can see this as celebrating a man who fought prejudice, then I think we can all join in and celebrate.

It's important to remember what went on a hundred years ago, for those who do not learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it.
I only wish that all Americans, especially black Americans would remember MLK's dream that his "children would not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their heart". Unfortunately, there are those among all races who wish to be judged by the color of their skin.
We need to remember what happened in the past, so we can see how things have changed for the better, and how they have changed for the worse. From there we can make our adjustments until Dr. King's dream is a reality.

We in simple terms had a clean bathing room put in on the first floor. Code required that they vent all the hot furniture. they had to zig zag the vent pipe via the present walls and up via the second one floor into the attic. once interior the attic, they ran the pipe up via the roof and placed on flashing less than the shingles. that is the way it could be finished. it may come out everywhere on the roof, yet you would probable want it interior the again so it may't be seen from the line.

Martin Luther King was a great man. I don't care what colour he was. Why are you making such an issue about race? I'll never understand why this kind of thing always comes down to "them" and "us" in American culture. Racism runs rampant on both sides of your argument.

Anyone, black or white, who has devoted their life to the better-meant of mankind, should be honored.
I'm more incensed by a generic presidents day.

I totally agree with you, 110%. We can't have a white club at school and they block the hallway at school.....only race that does that in the busiest hallway and they don't get told to move. They are racist towards us and they think that we should bow down to them because of the past. I'm not saying all Blacks, but most of them. And they get a whole month dedicated to them, I can't stand it.
