Over the holidays, people in Nebraska and Colorado were hit with back-to-back ice storms in which the destruction equalled that of a category 5 hurricane. Thousands of people were and still are w/o heat, running water, etc., and are stranded inside and outside of their homes. Not to mention the deaths. This storm has caused millions of dollars of damage. My question is why hasn't the media covered this story as extesnsively as they covered (and still are covering) Katrina? Why weren't the people of these states out there demanding FEMA come and help them. Where was the robbing, raping and looting, and murdering? Why weren't the people out there blaming the gov't for this disaster?

Appreciate intelligent answers from all you ladies and gentlemen across the USA...

Q & A Queen...I find it interesting that you mention that I am implying racism in my question. I'm sorry, but nowhere in my question do I mention it...your answer tells me something about you, though...

I was going to say what I felt, but you know what? I don't feel like getting chewed out and seeing about 30 thumbs down.

I'm sorry for the weather issues in the midwest. I wish that the media was more "fair" and told all the stories. They just tell the ones that fire more people up. Since no one in the midwest is asking for aid, there's nothing to get fired up about.

And for the person who said the utilities would be back in a month or so, is that acceptible? Is it acceptible to be without heat in the middle of winter? I don't think so, mister. You see, it doesn't get cold often in LA, and they don't know what it's like to be cold. So it's acceptible to be without heat. NOT!

For one the death rate in the midwest in no way compares to Katrina. Because of Katrina people are still without homes, jobs and etc. With the storms this winter everything should be back to normal within a few weeks time. Three years from now we'll still see the damage as a result of Katrina.

Not sure. I am in Oklahoma, and we got hit my three ice storms, and even thought it was really bad out here, i didn't see too many wrecks or anything, just a lot of cars on the sideo f the orad. My power never went out, but a lot of people's did. I'm not sure why we didn't get much coverage, but to be honest with you, i know most of us here in Oklahoma don't really care if people know or help us because almost everyone here has dealt with a disaster before, and as a state, we pull together on our own to help each other out. Of course, help is nice, but the storm probably didn't get as much coverage because people weren't begging for it and just wanting everyone else to pitty us, instead we are like, "do whatever you want to do, we got this under control"

just my thoughts

I think it's because ice storms don't imply catastrophic global warming. That, and it makes the current administration look bad. Oh, and there's not as much oil in those places in the midwest (at least not refineries) the loss of which allegedly causes my gas prices to rise all over the U.S.

Also, ice storms are a lot harder for the media to navigate than the rubble-filled streets of southern cities. Now why the charities don't advertise about it using stock footage is what I don't understand...

Because it was a Winter storm.
That is normal for Winter. It happens almost every winter and people are used to it and deal with it. Hurricanes are normal also, to a degree. But the devastation left people with no shelter and total losses as compared to the winter storms where people just stayed in and relaxed. They burned wood (that they stored in preparation) and just made the best of it.
They melted snow for water ( where in Katrina the water was polluted by sewage). Except for the relative unfortunate few that were caught travelling in the midwest,
they had their own clothes, their own beds, their own shelter, and the faith that the sun would melt the snow by spring.
If you are looking for the answer that it was because in Katrina they were poor, black, liberal democrats you have wasted 5 points and should be ashamed of yourself.
This is just a common sense issue.

The damage has not DISPLACED very many people. Lack of utilities will likely be repaired in less than 1 month. Most of the structures are still habitable and NONE of it is below sea level.

I heard that 21 people have died because of the ice storms in the midwest as opposed to almost 1,500 people in Katrina...maybe that's why.

Ahhh... it's the age old human response to things... remember back in first grade, "Teacher, Teacher, look Tommy got more ice cream than I did..."
Well this type of mentality carries through to all ages and all situations... It really has nothing to do with hurricanes or ice storms...

I understand the temptation to see this as a racial issue. But ask yourself... Did these icestorms

a) Expose the deplorable lack of emergency preparedness in this county
b) Wipe out an entire city... one that is/was a cultural/historical icon of the country
c) Kill thousands and displace hundreds of thousands.
=========
I'm sorry, I didn't actually mean you :) I meant in response to your question because it invariably deteriorates to that one issue. . Peace!!
