Yesterday I saw my catfish doing flips in the tank. It looked like he was doing backflips continuously, really fast. I checked on him a little later and he had stopped, but was moving very slow.

Even before all of this, he spent about a full day in hiding in one of my tank decorations.

What's wrong with him? One minute he's acting strange, the next he's fairly normal!

Make sure that the temp. of your water is right. If the temp is too low it can really play with the swimming abilities of your fish. This happened to one of my fish and as soon as I raised the temp of the water he was fine within a few hours.

Check your water levels and make sure they are ok. I am not sure what kind of catfish it is but make sure it is getting enough food. When I went from my 10 gal tank to my 50 gal I starved my catfish not knowing that they eat their food from the bottom and with the bigger tank the food just wasn't getting to the bottom for them.

A pet store will usually test the water for free. Just put some water into a clean container (a zip lock baggie works good) and take it into the store.

The catfish may be fine. I have a pictus cat that is somewhat insane and swins crazily. Most catfish like large tanks, so a smaller tank might influence their swimming.
