Check out the link below for data on average annual wages for major metropolitan areas in the US. San Antonio was included, of course.

The data are 5 years old so the absolute amounts are no longer quite accurate. However, you can use the figures to compare one area against another as well as one year against the previous year.

For example, the 2002 figure for San Antonio is $31,336 and for 2001 is $30,650. That is an increase of 2.2%. Let's say you live in the Salt Lake City area, UT, the 2001 figures would be $31,965, for 2002, $ 32,600 or an incrase of 2.0 . You may conclude that the wages in S.A. are slightly lower but the rate of growth isa bit higher than in SLC etc...

You need to also consider the cost of living. The cost index for Texas is about 0.9 or 90% of the average cost in the US. That means $31,366 is really equal to $ 34,851 in purchasing power on the average. Since the Mountain States' cost index is about 102%, the same $31, 366 in S.A would be equivalent to $31,993 in SLC.

Wages in San Antonio seem to be on the lower side of the wage curve from my experience. However, housing is proportionately inexpense depending on where you live in town.

Austin, which is about an hour away, has a much higher wage scale - but also a higher cost of living. So I guess it is all relative.
