It depends what type of hard drive you are installing. There are two common types right now. The first is a SATA drive. The second is Ultra ATA. SATA is faster, more secure etc. but will be a little more expensive.

When installing a Ultra ATA drive there are usually only two connectors on your mother board where the ribbon will fit. Marked next to those connectors will read IDE0 and IDE1. You always want to install your primary hard drive on IDE0.

When installing the SATA drive it will be similar. You will find 2 or sometimes 4 connectors on the motherboard (depending on what type of board you get). Again you will see markings on the board that will indicate SATA0 SATA1 SATA2 etc.

Below is a link to some flash tutorials on how to install a drive.

You have 2 channels, Primary and Secondary. Each channel supports 2 drives, for a total of 4 possible drives. The drive Windows is on should be connected to the Primary channel and set to Master. Your DVD should be connected to the Primary channel and set to Slave. Your New HDD should be connected to the Secondary channel and set to Master and your other CD (if you have one) should be connected to the Secondary channel and set to Slave. Look on the back of all hard disk and cd/dvd drives and you will see a little jumper that is plugged in to one of 3 possible positions: MA, SL, CS. MA = Master, SL = SLAVE, and CS = Cable Select. Only use the MA & SL positions.

If you are using new components, modern that is, you most likely will be installing a SATA Serial ATA drive. There are two flavors, one takes a STANDARD SATA interface cable for the communication of the drive to the motherboard and includes a standard molex power connector.

The other type is all SATA connectors, The power uses a special connector for SATA drives. Most power supplies these days have those connectors, they are vary narrow and wide.

The cables will only connect properly in one direction, so don't force the cable, if it does not go in smoothly, then you are most likely connecting it wrong.

Hmm, im sure youve installed ur mobo, you got wire with much lill holes? yes its HD wire, connet one to mobo and another to HD, for power you can take it for free used power cord, it usually coloured red and yellow. make sure you put yellow on the right side. if you want to install more than one, you must choose which one to be boot disk and another to be slave disk. feel free to contact me.

Just look at your hard drive right now and just connect the same way you see it.
