If you can, check the fluid level in the battery by removing the caps and looking in, use a battery powered flashlight or low voltage work light, as a spark or flame can prove hazardous. If it is below the indicator, fill each cell up the indicator with distilled water. Once done try charging again. If that doesn't work, then replace the battery, as I doubt you have the tools, knowledge to rebuild it.

To rebuild a battery as I understand it, the battery must be drained and taken completely apart, plates cleaned, straightened and aligned before putting it back together and sealing it. It is hazardous due to the acid involved and the gases produced.

To convert dc to ac requires an inverter which is available at most auto stores or centers. To build one takes more time and money than buying one.

Not quite sure if I'm missing something here Gareth? Only a 12V battery charger will charge a 12V car battery! your altenator normally keeps trickle charging the battery when the car is running, but if you have a flat battery or a replacement one, then it will need charging out of the car. Only a charger designed for Car batteries will work though... a small 12 v plug in charger used for a portable TV or the like will not have enough amperage to charge a car battery. A Vauxhall Omega 2.5 litre engine will need a big amount of oompfh to turn over. If your battery has drained it has drained for a reason... 4/5 times I have had a problem it has either been a faulty battery or has ended up with the battery being damaged with the flattening. Get it checked to see if it will 'hold a charge' before you waste time trying to recharge it. My Vauxhall 2.2 petrol engine, needed an upgraded battery. The AA man suggested I get a battery designed for a Diesel engine as they have more amps and power. Hope that has answered your question , but amend your question if you need anything else. Rgds, MIKE

By the time you buy the equipment and parts needed to refurbish the battery, you could buy 20 new batteries. Just trade it in on a new one.
The procedure they use is to open the batter up and replace the plates in the battery.

the problem with batteries is after time, the metal in it flakes off making it inefficient to the point of it not being able to hold a charge. there is nothing you can do, and unless you are emotionally attached to it, swap it out at west marine.
