i'm a smoker, i only smoke when i am bored or have 5 mins to kill. try to take his mind off it like taking up a hobby together, get him to help you cook, go for a walk, generally try to keep him buisy when he feels the urge for a ciggy. tell him how proud you are of him, try putting 20p in a money jar everytime he wants a ciggy too...that way he can see how much money he is saving, then he can treat himself to something nice at the end of the month.

I agree with the guy above. When I quit , sitting around after a meal was murder , activity really does help. Being constantly reminded how well he is doing giving up smoking isn't too good either , just makes him want a cig , I put a chart on my wall from inside the patches packet and everyday you place a sticker on the previous days date , this was a godsend as everyday I triumphed over the cigs I was so proud to place the sticker . Nothing is sure fire , will power is at the end of the day is paramount to stopping.Whatever his favourite cig of the day is the most important one to quit , if its with morning coffee take the coffee to go , again activity. Best of luck with this , it will be the best and hardest thing he will ever probably do.

Get him several bottles of Distilled water. Use it for everything; tea, coffee, cooking, ice cubes. It will pull the nicotene out of his body quicker.
Go to health food store & buy him an herb called "Lobelia". It has 2 positive effects on smokers; 1) it naturally calms the body while going through withdrawal, but it also 2) fools the body into thinking it has nicotene when it doesn't.
Lastly, find out what his triggers are. Mine were when I was driving, when I had coffee, & when I was on the phone. Place snacks in those places, because he will subconsciously identify those places with smoking. Buy cinnamin sticks to suck on, carrot sticks, celery sticks, rice cakes; anything healthy that he can use to replace the cigs he's missing.
Give him a backrub. This will also greatly relax him. And, the encouragement helps.

Offer to quit someting with him. Do you have a bad habit? Maybe chocolate, coffee, alcohol? I'm a ex smoker myself and can understand both of you. Now i look at smokers and think its the easiest thing in the world. At the time, quitting was the worst thing i ever done. Encorouge him, support him, understand him. And good luck!!!!

if you are in the uk go on the net and type in nicorette, they have an online management programme to help people stay cigarette free, there are also lots of support groups . local nhs groups and www.givingupsmoking.co.uk. he needs to keep busy and perhaps see a docotr or smokingcessation advisor about nicotine replacement therapy.

they will be cranky and you'll have to use patience dealing iwht them. I've heard that grapefruit tablets can help stave off the cravings but i don't smoke, so i dont know how true that is, but you could always give it a try and find out...
good luck!
