that we found on the door step in a box, which had been sent to us from africa from a very annoying friend. Any way, we have looked after it for a year now, he is healthy and he is getting looked after properly, he has the right food, shelter, lamps, heat etc. However, we don't have papers for it. Is it illegal and if so what should I do coz I don't want to lose him?

No he had has friend to deliver it. The tortiose is perfectly healthy. In Africa it would have been in a hamser cage, treated VERY poorly. It is better off with us, we care for it dearly and want it to be protected and to grow healthy and fit. In the summer he chases the guinea pigs around the garden - so funny ans the guinea pigs are scared of him and so they run away more.

This all depends on what species of tortoise it is. While owning Sulcatas and redfoots is fine (local law providing), there are species that are endangered and on the C.I.T.E.S (Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species) lists, Galapagos tortoises and Gopher Tortoises come to mind first off, but I know there's others. You need to be absolutely 100% sure that this IS a legal tortoise to own, otherwise, if the wrong person finds out, there's potential big legal trouble in this. Also, if your friend doesn't have the proper import/export permits for whatever type of tortoise it is (because I believe ALL tortoises in the pet trade now have to be captive raised) he/she could get themselves in big trouble if this is something they do on a regular basis. Anyway, figure out what you have, and go from there.

it may be powerful to renowned the place you're going, and the variety you're going/how long you will return and forth. many times, a pair days with minimum help isn't a huge deal. a typical selection is 'cocooning'- p.c.. them of their very very own plastic bins or tubs with lids that are on the area of their length (disposable foodstuff storage boxes are great), then p.c.. them with moss, paper toweling, and so on.around them to decrease flow and tension (it is far less stressful than shifting around in small, darkish places). Their might desire to be some very minor dampening to maintain some mushy humidity. some air holes on each and each wall grants ventilation. positioned the tubs in a container and positioned wadded newspaper around to decrease flow, vibration, and warmth loss. make beneficial air can nonetheless circulate around the tubs freely. upload some chemical hand-warmer packs interior the container if mandatory to maintain temps down. positioned some air holes interior the container. If conceivable, use a probe thermometer with a severe/low alarm to computer screen the temps interior the boxes. Label each and each tub and the container with emergency coaching- what's in there, a sturdy touch huge variety, a reward furnish, and so on. purely in case it gets faraway from you. purely as a speedy FYI- Sulcata is the African Spurred Tortoise, not Spur-thighed. that's a typical blunders at a variety of of sites. The Greek is the Spur-thighed.

I have a tortoise and when we bought it, the person who we bought it from told us it is illegal to have a tortoise if it wasn't bred in yor country and bought in your country. Maybe it is best to go into a pet shop that sells reptiles and ask someone there who should know (but maybe don't mention that you have one just incase it is!)

Are you saying the tortoise was posted to you? That's incredibly cruel and possibly against the law. I think you should speak to a vet for advice here - please don't let the tortoise suffer.
