Because the hymen doesn't block it completely. The hymen is a membrane that stretches across the vagina. It has one or more holes in it (there are several variations including one large round hole in the middle, several smaller round holes or one or more long thin "cuts" or "tears"). In some instances it is little more than a "narrowing" of the vagina. Many girls tear their hymen performing simple physical exercises during childhood or early adolescence.

It is quite unusual for the hymen to completely obstruct the vagina and in most instances when this happens it will partially ruptured by the first monthly blood flow.

The hymen does not completely block the vagina - there is a small hole to allow passage of the uterus lining during the period.
