Daedalus was an Ancient Greek. He was an inventor. He designed the labyrinth for King Minos of Crete, who then imprisoned him and his son Icarus on the island so that no-one would learn the secret of the Labyrinth. Daedalus made wings for himself and his son of of wax and birds' feathers. Icarus despite warnings flew too high , got too close to the sun and the wax melted. He plunged into the sea and was drowned. Daedalus on the other hand reached land safely.

Daedalus is part of the myth of Icarus and Daelalus. They were confined to a labrynth of the father's (Daedalus) design and gathered wax and fallen bird feathers to fly out. Icarus flew too high and fell to his death. Daedalus escaped. I believe there are two scientific projects named for Daedalus. One was a huge glider powered only by bicycle pedaling. I think the other was involved with one of the CETI programs. Check Wiki. B.
