Those are called compression shorts. It gives the guys support where it is needed. It's never comfortable playing a sport when certain body parts are bouncing around hence the sports bra for women.

Mainly for support. Sometimes the equipment down there will move around a lot when not held directly in place and it can cause some pain. It is like a woman wearing a sports bra while playing tennis. It is also good for keeping a man dry and cool at the same time.

They mainly do that to prevent chaffing on their inner thighs, because they'll be running a lot chasing down the balls, so the innerside of the thighs has to be protected, cos a cup/jockstrap won't be able to do the job.
