how can children, help to make a difference in the world we live in today

Volunteerism.

Have the children do something which gives back to their community. It doesn't matter what their economic status/the economic status of their neighborhood is, everyone can give, and most kids enjoy it.

You must supervise them, of course, but brainstorm some ideas, pick one, get it together (logistics), and go for it.

You'll be very pleasantly surprised.
