This emotional issue began when u were 18. Maybe not the physical cough but the emotion of holding back what you need to SPEAK to someone and you need to go tell that person what you held in, then your cough will dissappear.

You should go to your doctor. It could be allergies to dust, mold, pets, etc. Something in your home could be causing this. You may have a slight case of Asthma. As strange as this sounds, you may have some Acid reflux going on. Next time you start to cough try taking a tums to see what happens. My Uncle told me about this, and I was surprised that the tums worked for me. No matter what it is though, anything chronic like this you should get to the doctor. Sometimes it is the pesky little things, like a cough that can signal a condition that needs to get taken care of before it develops into a major medical issue. Even Acid Reflux can have SERIOUS consequences. Also, if you smoke, even if it is a little, you are at risk for lung disease or cancer, please try to change your status from a light smoker to a non-smoker. I know it is hard, but the life you save could be your own.

I coughed for several years at a time once. Never smoked though, I suppose I should jump on the bandwagon and tell you to quit.
Anyway, suppress the urge to cough for as long as you can so that your throat can heal. Take some tea to fight the plegm (that junk in your throat) but not some killer drug like mucinex.
And then if you continue, it's probably an allergy. Clean the house severely. If that doesn't help after a week or so, try cutting foods like pork out of your diet. An allergy website could tell you how.

The real question is why the h e l l you haven't quit smoking? You will not see a major change in your health for several weeks after your last coffin nail, dude. Light smoker or heavy smoker, it makes little difference. ANY smoking is just plain asking for an early and very unpleasant death. Hey, you in that big a hurry to meet the undertaker, you can just step in front of a speeding train...
