For a silver dollar that old, the condition it's in is just about everything when it comes to prices. So unless you know how to grade it, or it is in a holder which a knowledgeable collector marked with a grade, you are not ready to sell it. The difference in value can be pretty amazing. I've put a link below to get you started, but what you a looking for is grading.
Even a very pretty coin that age, if it is worn, is unlikely to meet your expectations of a "rare and valuable" coin. They are competing in the marketplace with ones that have been protected by collectors since the day they came from the mint, or very nearly.
Look at good close-up photos which explain the grading for that particular coin, and decide what grade it is. Be honest with yourself, because over-grading will get you in trouble in the long run, while very slight under-grading gets you brownie points. Be only a little modest, and you will probably be accurate.

If you went to the old coins store and tied to buy one just like it they would want hundreds of dollars. But - if you pulled it out and tried to sell it to them they would hem and haw and screech about how yours is not the same as theirs and they will give you $10. Then the next day you could go back and see yours on sale for hundreds too. Coins are a rip-off as there really are only a very very few that are actually worth anything. Ebay or another auction site is best for you. Go to coin store and look it up in a book and see what the book value is and set minimum bid about $10 below that. Hope this helps and good luck to you.

an 1876 silver dollar would have to be a trade dollar. right now the U.S. market is flooded with counterfeit trade dollars coming out of china, so buyer beware

It depends upon the condition of the silver dollar and the market value of silver on the day you want to trade it.
