IM NOT RACIST

For the same reason there is an NAACP but no NAAWP; a Miss Black America Pageant, but no Miss White America Pageant; -- the list goes on and on.

Why are those all acceptable, but if we had the "White" versions, it would be considered racist? It also goes for religion -- for example, there have been Jews who have sewed (and won) to get to take off Hannukah, Rosh Hashanna, and Yom Kippur as holidays, yet they also take off for Christmas and Good Friday.

It is a double standard in this country.

I understand the point you're coming from, especially if you think about other factors such as there are specified college funds for African Americans and Hispanics but not specifically for "white people" as you put it. To me this doesn't seem fair because not just minority races have a problem affording college. Even I couldn't afford to go to college because my mom's credit was too good and yet she wouldn't help support me financially. Before the end of my first semester I was forced to drop out even after having spent six to eight months during my senior year of high school applying for various scholorships as well as grants and loans.

But then again, you also have to look at our history. The "white man" has always been on top. The president has always been a white male and we finally have gotten the first woman (Nancy Pelosi) to hold the title of Speaker of the House. I am not racist either, but I have mixed feelings about this specific question because specific African Americans (not all) do put a bad name out for others, such as gang members. Going around and shooting people isn't a way to climb the ladder of success. I feel bad that society looks at the negative aspects of a culture and then generalizes amongst it.

As long as racism continues to live on throughout our society the Earth's population will never be able to move forward together. Martin Luther King Jr. did a great thing for society and this is why there is a holiday. Not just because he was African American, but because he helped millions of people to gain freedom. The United States is known as the Land of the Free - lets keep it that way. Great question.

Most holidays are celebrated as an acknowledgment for some great cause/leader in history...and for all American people or anyone living in the United States.
By the way...not all holidays are a "given" day off...
Here in South Carolina...in January most but not all schools are closed for MLK Day...the ones that are open that day do not count students absent if they choose to take the day off...but to be fair alot of those same schools also recognize "Confederates Day" as well...again the schools aren't all closed, but they don't count it against the students that choose to stay home.
It's not about Race...it's about Heritage...and the great leaders and hero's of our country and commemorative dates.

You mean like President's day, (no black people there) which was originally Lincoln/Washington's birthday (both white, last time I checked), or Christmas (certainly not considered a 'Jewish' holiday) or Thanksgiving (anyone think the 'white' pilgrims would have gotten a holiday if they had originally been 'black' instead?)

Not only that, what does the Fourth of July represent? Does it represent 'independence' of all people, or mostly the independence of 'white' people (black recognition and independence/liberation is not actually celebrated in this country, since it didn't occur until 1865 legally, and 1863 technically, almost 87 years later, later still if you wait until the Civil Rights act of 1965) You would be hard-pressed to find a signer of the Declaration who considered black people to be included in that 'all men are created equal' phrase.

So, in all actuality, there are LOTS of white people holidays that you get off, that is if you actually cared to think about it.

Many of the people who answered this question along with the person who asked it; are very ignorant. Don't you guys no that MLK day is a holiday for everyone not just black people. He wanted to make peace and equality for everyone. This isn't a black day off, because whites, blacks, hispanics, and asians are off today. So think before asking such an ignorant question as this one.

It relies upon on the place interior the international you're. If in Japan, Jesus photograph could be yellow with slanted eyes. interior the Continent of Africa, Jesus photograph could be a black Jesus, some Spanish speaking international locations have a image of Jesus as being Tan or having Indian good factors. human beings paint a image of Jesus from their geographical area. Racist? No. .

The day isn't a "black" day or a "white" day. It is paying respect to a man who did alot for the people, all people. If you can name someone who has done as much for the people, changes peoples thought process, and in all was working toward the good of humanity........well, I'm sure they likely have a day that we take off to pay respect to them.
(Though now days, most people just see such days as a day off to rest, not pay respect to those who it tributises)

No white days off? MLK day isn't about a black day off. It's about showing respect to one of the most important persons in U.S. history. MLK isn't just about blacks, but about civil rights in general.

Some school districts give President's Day off. Last time I checked, all U.S. presidents have been white.
