Much of mass communication industry depends on the explotiation and
manipulation of human weakness.
The one consistent theme permeating virtually all advertising is
consumer inferiority. By unconcious comparison, the consumer has to be
a loser, deficient and ordinary.

Ad models are always glamorous and desirable. The idealization works
like the unobtainable carrot being dangled in front of a jackass. That
carrot can dangle just out of reach througout a lifetime of consumer
behavior.

Because they are in the spotlight.

The simplest answer is "we all want what we can't have." I personally don't look up to, admire, and otherwise worship models and celebrities, but I can take a pretty good guess at why people do. All these people lead glamourous, seemingly-perfect lives. Their bodies look perfect, they have talent, they're so rich they can retire at this very moment and not have to worry about finances, they get to hob-knob with other celebrities and famous people, and they seem to have the ultimate lives. In an age where marital strife is not uncommon and unhealthy eating makes this country the most obese in the world, when one whose life is less than glamourous sees such "perfection," they instantly wish that their lives could be like that. But, without talent, or at least so they think, and without a perfect body, they believe they won't amount to that, and so worship and admire these celebrities and models, appraising their abilities to maintain a certain weight, look a certain way, and to sing, dance, or whatever it may be that they do. In a way, some live vicariously through these people of high-fashion in an attempt to lead a more glamourous life.

People are bored. People feel like they are "less than" and pop culture feeds the notion that everyone should look a certain way.
Media presents these humans as glamorous and elegant on the red carpet. We would look great too, if we had an entourage that includes: hairdressers, clothiers, makeup artists, assistants, personal trainers, etc etc
By the way, in print ads, parts of people that need "improving" are airbrushed to look fabulous. The media can make or break someone's career.
