My 9 mo. old son was newly diagnosed with an ear infection in both ears on Friday. He's been on antibiotics and motrin since then, but this morning he started having a cough that sounds like he's trying to hack up his lungs! Before I go rushing to the doctor I wanted to see if it was normal, especially since today is a holiday and his doctor would be hard to get ahold of. He's acting ok and he has some congestion and he gurgles a little when he breathes, but he's had the runny nose/congestion since Friday when we found out he had ear infections. Is it normal for his to cough like he's almost coughing up lung???

By normal I mean has it ever happened to any of your kids with an ear infection or can it be treated at home, etc.

In a 9 month old that is really hard to say if it's congestion or something else. My son was born premature and he since day one has cronic ear infections, bronchitis, respitory problems, ect... If he was seen on friday and was started on antibiotics, usually the antibiotics would have started making him feel better. He could have possibly gotten another virus or bacterial infection somewhere else. Congestion is really hard to diagnose in an infant w/out the dr looking at him. I would take him to see his Dr asap because he could have RSV, bronchitis, phenmonia or other respitory infections which could be easily treated by a medicine in a nebulizer. Children do cough, but to be coughing like you are describing you should take him to the dr's office as soon as possible or to the nearest Emergancy Room. He will get the proper care there if your dr isnt in. Take him especially if he has a fever that wont go away, if he hasnt eatten or drank anything, or if he just seems like he's not getting better!

Just to add to what everyone else said, the CDC just published report saying that over the counter cold and cough medicines are NOT recommended for children under age 2, as there are no studies on their effectiveness and no dosage guidelines. Cough medicines that supress the cough can actually build fluid up in the lungs and lead to bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Humidifiers, lots of fluid, and lots of love are better ways to heal a cough. And if treatment is in order, it is usually a nebulizer prescribed by the doctor.

THE ANTIBOTICS WILL HELP CLEAR ANYTHING UP IF THER ORAL(BY MOUTH)IT COULD BE THE DRAINAGE FROM HIS EARS GOING INTO HIS THROAT AND LUNGS. TRY SOME OTC COUGH MEDS IF YOU CAN FIND ANY FOR HIS WEIGHT AND/OR AGE. SIT HIM UP AND CUP YOUR HAND, AND PAT HIM ON THE BACK, IF THERE IS ANYTHING IN HIS LUNGS THAT WILL HELP BREAK IT UP. KEEP AN EYE ON HIM IF HE COUGHS ANYTHING UP, COULD GET COKED ON IT. IT IS STILL BAD OR YOU CANT FIND ANY MEDS CALL THE DR. BEFORE YOU GO IN THEY MIGHT JUST CALL YOU IN SOMETHING INSTEAD OF HAVEING TO GO IN. HOPE THIS HELPS

he got ear infection. the resistance becomes low, so he got colds
also. you can use steam inhalation to loosen the hard-dry cough.
encourage him to drink plenty of fluids. it is the best expectorant. let him lay down in a position wherein his head is elevated up to 45 degrees to ease the breathing, and bring him to the doctor as soon as you can

To be safe I'd just call the doc and see what they say. Even if the doc isn't in their answering service will answer and give the doctor the message. The doc will call you back and tell you what to do.
That is what i'd do If I were you.

It's best to speak to your doctor or one of his staff. You can never be too careful concerning your infant's health.
