Being 10 years older I can remember the unions causing the collapse of Wilson's government, the 3 day week and trying to revise for exams by candle light. The following years of Thatcherism were quite a nightmare with greed and self interest being the main driver. Mind you it did spur our service industries on and made busineeses competative. I also remember Thatcher breaking the NUM, and the general assault on workers throughout the period.
I voted for Labour many times and finally got the govt I asked for. Blair was a breath of fresh aoir after restrictive centralist conservative governance. Blair has done many good things, and some that have gone wrong - but generally Britain is a better place at the end. The distractors, many of whom are very young, probably aren't in a position to have anything solid against which to compare New Labour's performance - but it ids better than old guard labour and much better by far than what the conservatives had to offer.
Lets not put the conservatives into power, just because you have forgotten what the alternatives are.

and who can forget the bags of rubbish lining our streets under the last labour govt. the 3 day week... all because they couldnt stop spending... (sounds familiar now doesnt it).
Thatcher for all her faults at least did drag this country into the 20th century. if it wasnt for her we'd all be working down the mines.
as for Blair telling us we've never had it so good. billions pumped into the NHS, yet many PCTs are facing cuts. Complex IT projects which cost US billion, which do not work.
Fighting a war, and telling us no the armed forces are a priority, when our own armed forces are being cutdown in size, poorly equipted, and people wonder why numbers are down and people dont want to stay in the army.
an education system which year on year churns out so many record pass rates, yet people from both rich and poor backgrounds are priced out of going to University, and those who do are saddled with at least £10k of debt before they even start working.
Immigration service which allows wanted criminals to leave the country. perverts let lose on the streets on early releases.
oh its so great living in this new labour utopia.

You are the only one I know of, and I live in a North West, supposedly rock safe labour consituency.
The Government have not done well with the economy, they have given up running the economy all together, they left that job to the bank of England.
ALL labour have done since then is over-tax the profits of UK Plc, privatise and sell off state assets (not to the public oh no, but to Tony's corrupt cronies) and very very badly spend these tax proceeds. Meanwhile the UK is drowning in an ocean of debt.
The tories never lied to launch a disasterous invasion of a sovereign state on behalf of another soveriegn state.
Blair has been utterly contemptuious of the UK and it's peoples since the day he stepped through the door of No. 10.
You mention Boom and Bust? Look at this (linked below) trace of the values of the UK's top 100 companies since 1984 and that looks like a fairly steady growth under the tories followed by massive boom and bust under labour.
The labour party under Tony Blair has been a disaster.
Alexander 1969, it was John Major's tories who got the UK to rise to number 4 in the world, and the bank of England that has kept us there in spite of tosspot tony and greedy gordon.
David M, I also can remember the unions causing the collapse of Wilson's government and Callaghan stepping in and being rightly beaten by Thatcher. Blair is not fit to wipe Thatcher's feet.
It's people like you who have allowed the lying, corrupt scumbag to launch illegal wars leading to the situation we see today.

The questioner appears to be in the minority in those voting Labour. The only thing Labour has achieved is a relatively stable economy and they inherited that from the Major government. We've had Tony's wars, lies, deceit, freebie holidays, cash for peerages, etc, etc. How can anyone with a modicum of sense even think about voting for Labour again?

Just how do u classify alright, mr. blairite? do you think its somehow acceptable to lie to the nation, extort high taxes and ridiculous fees from students, do NOTHING to improve public transport, cut back life-saving services in the NHS, involve this country in a war over America's need and greed for oil and an EU constitution that is DEFINITELY not in our favour, and do sweet f.a. to improve social justice and/or the honesty or transparency of government? But that's okay, because apparently the Tories were worse... who's to say this country benefits from a two-party system?

What about the constant increases in indirect taxation with this government - and maybe too the legacy of Thatcher is what the UK is feeling in terms of its success - albeit with good management by the present incumbents

I voted for the labour party and I am more than satisfied that he has done his best for this country and the world in general. The ones who are spouting off would rather sit on their backsides and let the likes of Saddam carry on butchering innocent people and give refuge and support to the likes of Al Queda. Ignore them. They know not what they say. Tony Blair rules.

Doesn't matter all the good he's done for his own country, as long as he refuses to tow the line and hate Bush, like everyone else in the labour party, he's bollocks are far as most are concerned.
Too bad people's thinking is so narrow.
