Just want to share my friend's feelings regarding this issue:
Sophia tells me that fear shows ignorance. When people get to know each other that fear is dispelled.
This friend is retired from the phone company where she was an operator for many years. We belonged to a book club and became very close friends. She has demonstrated this truth many times.
Your question is a good one and I believe very appropriate.

Much of the time there is friction between the two. Black people are infamous for breaking off into their blacks-only groups (see staff in a cafeteria) and shun white people for being racists and elitist. Some would say that white people are not letting blacks in, but I've worked for decades around both races and it's the blacks who break off into their own groups. Now as to the fear, whites don't fear them but find their ways of doing business less efficient and fear criticizing them because the blacks can run to the EOO (Equal Opportunity Office) and complain and get listened to (whites don't have this option and won't be taken seriously), and then "offender" can get fired or humiliated into quitting easily.

I myself have worked with every race human (I think). I have never been scared of working with anyone regardless of race or national origin. Black Americans have always been easy for me to work with. The only problems I have ever had with people from other countries, regardless of race, are problems due to cultural and linguistic issues, but never fear. I can only speak for myself but I think you are likely to get the same answer from most white workers that do any physical labor (restaurants, construction, sanitation etc.) because in the 21st century many of us live in integrated neighbourhoods and hang out together anyway. Maybe middle class whites would give a different answer.

I wonder if some day white people will get all grouchy about the word Caucasian--my family doesn't come from anywhere near the Caucasus mountains.

Anyway, I'm definitely white as they come, and:

I don't feel physically threatened by blacks in the workplace, though I do worry some times about being accused of racism because of some misinterpretation or something. On the other hand, we've got very few in my office b/c I work in Asian Studies.

Not at all. Why would we be scared of them in the workplace? They are people with jobs just like the rest of us. My company is about as mixed as you can get -- white, black, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, Malaysian, Korean. Everyone is competant and does their job. You don't even really pay attention to their race.

I'm white and I'm not scared of black people in the work place. Why would I be? They are people with good qualities and faults like the rest of us.

No, as long as their behavior is appropriate to the workplace. I have worked in places where people have behaved as they would in the streets and that tends to irritate me more than scare me. I guess my point is that behavior is key, not skin color. I get irritated by white people who act like gangsters.

Hi,
35 y/o cauc. male...
I have an unusual point of view...
I grew up in the projects, I was the only white kid that I knew of.

Needless to say, I am quite comfortable around most everyone.
I do see that whites are often "scared" of blacks in the office and in the street. To be honest, it cracks me up!

No. I lived in a city that was 53% black, so half or more of my co-workers were also black. Only one of them pissed me off, and the rest were quite lovely to work with.

No. Out of the entire shop in my last real job, my closest friend was a black woman. And now her husband is one of my closest friends.
