I was reading about the Japanese Royal families chopstick cermony today, they had a ceremony for the baby using chopsticks for the first time, is this a common thing?

Yeah, it's common only for Royal families. I don't think we do that as well. I've never heard anyone do it at all.

In Japanese, it's called お箸初の儀, ohashi zome no gi.
