Or, are you doomed to be make $45K a yr in some tiny firm in the middle of no-where. Not all lawyers make good money. Are these the ones that couldn't get into a good school? I'm considering law school. I know I can get into one, but I'm not sure if I'm top tier material. I'd hate to go to school, come out w/ a ton of debt, and make a crap salary.

You want to shoot for the best school you can get into, but good grades / law review at a solid regional school will get you as far in your state / region as Harvard, Georgetown, or Michigan. The exception, perhaps would be some niche in the law that some one school excels at... but from your question it looks like you are open to anything that brings the $. The other thing to remember is that first job will be defined by your first year grades - those grades determine your clerkship / internship which will define that first job. Messing up that first year makes it a real uphill battle. In Texas, the best school happens to be the cheapest for state residents, so if you are here shoot for UT.
