If there were a white, communist, cocaine-abusing, wife beating plagiarist preaching these things to the country he would be exposed for all his faults, real and imagined, and labeled a racist hatemonger.

I don't think it was done to be politically correct. Martin Luther King was a great man. He did great things for black Americans and raised the consciousness of many white Americans. The consciousness of a nation that for too long ignored the rights of black Americans.

Anyone who has an impact that great on a society should be honored. The Washington memorial for him is long overdue as well.

No. Yes. When Jimmy Carter began to promote the idea of the holiday a comment was made in the press that the American worker did not care who the holiday was for, just so long as they got another three-day weekend.

Most definitely not. What you have to understand is the history behind Martin Luthers death. He was not shot for one reason or the hell of it. Go to the library and pick up a history book. Then you might have a better idea of what was really happening socially at the point in time.

A challenging question. It exposes the underlying racism in America. To be "politically correct" you must be prejudiced against whites. A far cry from non-discrimination.

You know, white people got enough dang holidays. I am white. I hope more Black people get national holidays so that we can remind ourselves that people actually died not too long ago and are still dying today because of the color of your skin. GET OVER IT: MLK gets his own damn holiday!!

If MLK were green, would he be praised by Greenpeace?

Why are you guys, as late as the late 2010's, still so freaking concerned about the color of the skin?

GET OVER IT!!

No, there are MANY white people who deserve the same, but white people don't put up such a "fuss" about it. Have to give some people what they want, or there might be an "uprising".

If he still he did what he did for civil rights, I guess we would still have a holiday honoring him. But this is just a guess.
