Starblazers. (Freaking GREAT show!!!)

The vessel is called the Argo (U.S.) or Yamato (Japan).

The primary weapon was called the 'Wave Motion Gun'.

no, no , no it wasn't robotech oh dude it's right on the tip of my tongue I remember that cartoon it used to be on with Battle of the planets, I do know that I've seen this at Blockbuster in the anime section

It sounds like Robotech. But i can be wrong due to not enough detail.
