Having a sign with some daily specials on it will attract those on foot. Put a coupon in your weekly newspaper shopper. Offer your customers a referral bonus, giving them a discount on their next visit when they bring a friend. Offer a punch card, that gives the customer a freebie when they get the card filled. Be the best that you can be, going out of your way to please your customers, and word of mouth will give you more business than you can handle. Offer little goodies to your customers as they wait, like cookies & coffee, or some samples of hand cream they can try as they wait. If you can contact an Avon representative, you can get some deals on hand cream mini's, if you buy in bulk quantities, depending on the representative. You can also get a sandwich board set up on the sidewalk out in front of your store, offering a special sale, based on the time of year (winter sale, spring sale, etc.). Of course, this is most effective if there's lots of foot traffic outside of your store. If you're out in the country, it's a little harder, and you'll have to depend on word of mouth and newspaper coupons & ads. Hope all goes well in your business. <*)))><

If you do men, the fact of the matter is that myself and most guys I know love having their hair done by attractive women. Employ a stunner! On the flip side this could intimidate potential female clientelle.
On the marketing front I genuinely think myspace is a great place to start. Set one up for your salon with pics and friendly "speil" and then there is a myspace facility that means you can find EVERYONE within a certain radius of your postal/zip code, befriend them all! This will be a great way to make them feel part of your "club," keep them posted with updates on deals and news etc - theyll think of you straight away when needing something done, even if they have never been before!

My salon has a weekly raffle for a free salon service... when you come in for your appt. you automatically get entered and then if you refer someone you're entered again when they come in and mention your name. It's great! I got a free manicure before Christmas. Word of mouth works well in advertising for "womens services." You might also want to do a "make over" on your local news at noon. I knew of a salon that did that weekly with a local boutique and they both gained a lot of attention [and customers] as a result.

I think you should get a sign that has brite colors and maybe put some of your cheaper prices on there so they come on to look at what you've got.
