I don’t hate reading, I love it, and I’m here to give the opposing point of view. There are a number of reasons why reading is less popular with young people now than in the past.
One is that our news media have reduced everything to quick glimpses and sound bites, thus reducing the average American’s attention span. There even used to be a TV show, Name That Tune, where you had to recognize and identify a song before the other contestants could; obviously, the one who could recognize it and identify it faster, based on hearing just the first few notes, would win. Then, forget about that one, because they went on to the next challenge. They were rewarding a short attention span!
A related fact is that since we (in America) have everything so convenient—instant coffee, instant on TV, microwave snacks, etc.—we want everything right away. This drive for convenience has fed the most selfish parts of our souls. (“I want what I want, when I want it, and piping hot, and plenty of it!”)
Also, we want simplicity, because life is more complicated than ever before. Real life is messy and inconvenient. We can’t keep track of multiple characters in a plot, or the details of their private lives. This is partly (I think) because our own extended families are reduced. We care less for our grandparents, we live far away from them, and our parents are separated or divorced. We can’t keep track who our best friend is living with since her folks broke up, why would we bother to read a long novel where we might have to flip back a chapter or two to double check something we missed?
[Is my answer getting too long for you…? Read on…!]
To the person who said that books provide no visuals, I would say, they provide the best visuals of all! Your own imagination! That is what we need stimulated, not to have the job done for us! (If only we could transfer the images conjured up by our imagination directly to video… imagine what a powerful teaching and/ or entertainment tool THAT would be!)
And, as another person pointed out, nobody reads textbooks for entertainment. But reading for fun helps us learn to be mentally organized, to categorize things, so that we can memorize facts, and learn. That is how people can learn chemistry or medicine, or engineering, or any of the other disciplines that have given us all the modern conveniences we enjoy today.
Through books, we can visit the past, like time travellers. We can go to the Moon, where only a few people have ever been. We can do so many things, go places, that we would not have enough time for, otherwise.
Imagine the early cavemen, who struggled long and hard to learn how to make flint spearheads, and to hunt, just to survive. Suppose one died young? Killed by a saber tooth tiger, or trampled by a mammoth. If he didn’t get to show the others how to hunt, how to make a good spear, his life was wasted because he did not benefit his tribe. But when we learned language, we could pass messages on, stories. When we learned art, we learned to draw pictures of bison and antelopes on the cave wall and put spears in them: “This is where you have to hit them to bring them down; this is how you can feed yourself and survive.” That was the earliest writing, that was the earliest reading. And it helped us survive.
There are those who say, history is bunk. But the truth is, those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat the same mistakes until they DO remember. That’s what language is about.
Read…. please, read.

I hate books such as biology and chemistry books. Because it asks understanding and it is sometimes difficult to grasp the concept without the teacher. As for other books, such as novels, manga, and other stuff, it's all cool. Because it is interesting. People only read what they like. Some don't like comics or such but they read newspaper instead. As for movies that are made up from books, people just watch it because all the time u spent on those will be shorten into 1hour and 30 min soo in a way it saves times. There are amny types of novels and books for every tastes and ages. What they should do, is to pick up the right category that fit them and what they like.

It is due to the short attention span and lack or imagination that seems to be prevalent in today's society. Personally, I've been an avid reader for years and am currently re-reading the "Dune" series, all the way from the beginning ("prequel trilogies" by Brian Herbert), through the newly-released Dune 7 (part 1).
Reading is something that is instilled in children at a young age. Sometimes it doesn't take...but audiobooks are a nice method to try ad stimulate that imagination.
