Take the glow plugs out and test them by putting the metal body of the glow plug on 1 terminal and a wire from the other terminal to the top threaded part of the glow plug and see if after about 4 seconds its glowing bright red. You might want to hold the glow plug with a pair of pliers as they get hot. If all 4 are working then its the control unit that is bolted on the front n/s inner wing normal coloured blue about 3 inches by 1.5 inches good luck

There could be several overriding factors with this situation, to much oil in the engine, for one, injectors need cleaning (try putting some injection (diesel) cleaning fluid in your fuel tank), fuel & air filter need changing for another, glowlugs not working properly,??
& as someone has already said could have had petrol in it at some time ???, is it very high mileage ???, when was it last serviced properly ???? these are all factors that have to be concidered, failing that you have bought a pup

to test ur heater plugs take the metal strip that connects them all off,get a piece of wire and connect it to the live wire on your batt{care full not to touch the car body} just brush the top of the glow plug thread if you get a slight spark then its working if you don't then there's your fault, the ignition has to be switched on to do this,i only found out how to do this after 20 cans of easy start on an old fiat uno a couple of years ago

Are you following the glow-plug warm-up procedure (ie. turning the ignition on & waiting for the warning light to go out)? If you are, try doing it several times in succession without starting the engine. If that helps it may be that the glowplugs are on the way out, it's not unknown.

Just do not do what we did a couple of months ago. Filled the car with Petrol instead of Diesel, cost us quite a lot having it drained .

just take the glow plugs out and short them across the battery to make sure they all work,if you keep on cranking you'll be into a new starter before long.
