The one problem that you have is your GPA. There are two things that can mitigate the low GPA -- the first is that it is due to your Freshman year. If you did really well after that -- then it won't matter. Make sure that you address it in your admissions essay. The second thing is that you will be taking AP classes. If you do well in them then your GPA will go up quite a bit.

I've read that letters of recommendation from politicians do not work well unless they really know each other well. Given that you were a sophomore when he ran, I wouldn't use him unless you keep in touch with him during your junior and senior years. Ivev if you do use his letter, make sure you send a recommendation from someone at your school as well.

You sound like a student who should get into NYU. The SAT scores are very good. What is your percentile rank in your graduating class?

You have made it, and you could also at NYU if you are optimsitic about it. If you think you can then - YOU CAN!!!
