Sometimes I feel embarrassed to be British because so many of my fellow country men are idiots, racists, bigots, sexist and quite frankly horrible. they have little understanding of the world around them or how to conduct themselves in public. They go abroad to 'watch' football and end kicking the sh!t out of some poor sod.

I am in my mid 20's i live in London and that automatically gives people a false impression of who i may be because of stereotypes and i hate this.

Does anyone have any similar feelings or experiences?

There have been times when I have felt more angry than embarrassed because I'm British, I hate the fact that some people automatically judge you for the country your from and have found myself on occasion's apologising for been British, but I have stood my ground and explained that we are not all idiots, racist or bigots, some of us love the country were from and have better values than the idiots who do give us a bad reputation, but you know the world over there are idiots from all countries and all walks of life not just in Britain.

It's not just Britain - every nation is embarrassed by it's hooligans, louts, vandals etc.

In the animal kingdon, in lions, elephants etc., young males (usually) are also unsociable. They are often kicked out of the tribe/pack/troup to wander about until they have learnt to be a bit more grown-up & sociable.

We are supposed to be more intelligent, yet we haven't learnt how to do that - doh!

Some countries do manage to limit the impact of their unsociable youth (often at a high price in curbing "freedom"), but it is always there.

It's also sad that some grown-ups never mature and become sociable, so you get the phenomenon of the older hooligan.

I do agree to a certain extent. Sometimes it makes me cringe when when I see football hooilgans on TV which quite frankly does make me ashamed to be British, but on the other hand there is alot more to proud of in our country and those narrow minded thugs are just a minority.

There are good people and bad where ever you go. I suggest you try not to be too judgmental and keep your eyes open. Seems to me that the people we draw into our lives is how we react in general. I am not saying you are like what you described but are you outgoing and kind?
Try to find new friends by getting out to the spa, the coffee house, the library and other places and finding the people that have the same interests in you.

I certainly don't feel embarrassed to be English I'm proud of who i am and my country. I have never caused any problems to this society so why should people who are law abiding feel embarrassment for the low life who disrespect their country.Just show the world your not one of them. Why does you being who you are give people the wrong impression about you, Why worry about other peoples behaviour just keep your nose clean and enjoy your life it passes so quickly.

I do know what you mean, but you should always be proud of who you are. Our country is not the only country with thuggish idiots. Iraqi people have to contend with daily car bombs and the constant threat of terrorism, from their own people, yet the vast majority are fiercely proud of their nationality. I am proud to be English

You were no doubt brought up in the right way ie respectful of other people and property. I'm no youngster and I have seen life in the services home and away. believe me I was certainly no angel but I did not make other people suffer in my quest for 'fun'.
Don't feel embarassed just ignore the d---k heads and
'Walk on the other side of the road'.

I love the British. Of course I'm half british so I am a bit biased.

I'm sure if you come spend the weekend here with me in Detroit, you will have a little more pride in your countrymen.

I agree with what you say - most of the violence is caused by drink I should think. Usually, I find when abroad, that I usually keep with the foreigners then nobody will know I'm English. Believe me it works.

it's not just a British thing dude, its a human thing, and I believe the sentiment you're expressing more often goes by it's technical name: misanthropy- hatred, dislike, or distrust of humankind.

join the club, it's easy enough to do.
