No, in my opinion they don't write better songs when they're on class A's. Who wants to write songs when you're off your head on whatever-your-poison-is?

However, drug use does provide you with experiences, but these are often better off written about with the benefit of hindsight.

My example is myself and most of the current and ex-class A musicians I know, so this is a pretty subjective answer! Nothing I've written whilst on a binge has ever made me money or brought me success, whilst the sober stuff has....

Drug use helps, but I'd say better songs are written during times of depression.
No money, no job, no girl,no car... No drugs??
But, think of mr.mckaye, who never used drugs (so he's said). It's hard to find better songwriting than Fugazi.

I'd say yes. Maybe its that in a life of drug use, more interesting things (though dangerous) may happen that you can write about. Such as ruining your relationships, near-death experiences, etc. Read 'The Dirt-Confessions of Motley Crue', if you've got the stomach for it.

I would say no.

Look at great songwriters like Burt Bacharach and Holland/Dozier/holland. They didn't need drugs to write great pop tunes, so i believe it is a myth.

inspect "Glass Onion" from the White Album. It mentions lots of their different songs in there. that's one among my favorites, musically and for the references. Lennon does a superb interest vocally (as customary) and that i think of that your class will rejoice with it. supply it a shot!
