Ok, San Diego tried to tie the game with a field goal and missed but then New England got a 15 yard penalty for unsportsman like contuct, with 3 seconds to go, why didn't San Diego try for another field goal instead of taking a knee??? Are you not allowed to try for a field goal on first down or is it because the ball has to go through the uprights before the clock hits zero? Can someone please explain why I think San Diego threw that game by not trying for another field goal.

The penalty was called after San Diego missed the FG attempt.
The call was unsportsmanlike conduct for the Patriots who took off their helmets in celebration.
The ball then went to the Patriots who were penalized the 15 yards.
With 3 seconds to go in the game, Brady took a knee to run out the clock.

The penalty was considered to have happened after the play. Due to the missed field goal, it was New England's ball. The penalty just made New England take a knee 15 yards further back.

The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty -- for excessive celebration -- occurred after the missed field goal attempt, so New England had possession of the ball regardless of the penalty. If the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty occurred during the play -- i.e. roughing the kicker -- San Diego would've kept the ball and have had another shot at the field goal.

The unsportslike conduct foul on New England was a dead ball foul, meaning it occured AFTER the play had ended. Therefore, New England still retained the ball (after the missed field goal) and were penalized from the spot of the missed FG.

It was not there ball. The penalty happened after the play. It was New England who took a knee. Were you even watching the game?

It was none of them. They were just to far out of field goal range for their kicker.
