You aren't going to make a living in programming by writing Foxpro databases.

You want to know Oracle, SAP, Citrix or SQL Server, in order of worth. Learn any of those and you'll find work.

Your best bet is to ask your clients if they know of anyone who runs similar systems to theirs or any businesses that might need your services. Offer a bounty of 10 - 15 percent of your bid to them for referrals.

Your best advertisement is a happy customer. Happy customers send work your way.

Five foxpro programs is not enough to base a career move on, unless you have another job that will bring in enough money while you start this business. I would advise that you stay with the current job, write programs on the side now, and study several other languages. When the programming jobs earn at least 1/2 of what the computer operator job pays, and you are turning away business, and you have enough money in the bank to live on with no income for 6 months, then quit as a computer operator and start programming full time. Otherwise, you will probably go broke quickly.

The way to be a freelance _anything_ is to get out there and freelance! Find jobs any way you can - earn yourself a good reputation. Advertise, make phone calls, do everything you possibly can - that is what freelancing is all about!

Learn C#. It is a very popular programming language, relatively easy to learn (compared to C++) and it's Microsoft, so it's not going away anytime soon.
