this question is made easy by grouping terms(variables) with the same exponents:
= (7m2-5m-8) - (5m2+2m+9) // multiply terms on the right bracket with the negative sign outside the bracket
= (7m2 - 5m2)(-5m - 2m)(-8 - 9) // group like terms
remember terms with the same sign are added 2gether
= 2m2 - 7m - 17

Just do like terms.
7m^2 - 5m^2 = 2m^2 because 7-5 = 2.
-5m - 2m you can do for yourself: What's -5-2?
and you can do -8-9.
Maybe it would have been a little trickier if it were
Subtract 5m^2 - 2m + 9 from 7m^2 - 5m - 8.
The m^2 term and the constant are still the same, but
-5m -(-2m) = -5m + 2m = -3m
Or again, if it were
Subtract 5m^2 - 11m + 9 from 7m^2 - 5m - 8
we'd have
-5m -(-11m) = -5m + 11m = 6m

(7m^2 -5m -8)-(5m^2 +2m +9)
7m^2 -5m -8 -5m^2 -2m -9=0
2m^2 -7m -17=0
then if u wanted to calculate m...
(7+or- root 7^2 -4x2x-17)/4
m= 5.15 or -1.65
