I had gone to many of the marches and sit ins in Alabama and had been around MLK but had never seen him smoke. That does not mean that he did not, he was a minister and while a huge segment of the population did smoke during his lifetime as it was part of the main culture, however, as a minister he may have felt that it was important to not smoke in public as many older Americans and some strong religious folk felt that tobacco was wrong even though it was the lifeblood of much the economy in that region. I have never seen a picture of him smoking either. Funny but I never gave this any thought before you asked.

Yes Dr. King smoked cigarettes. At the time he was shot, he had gone out on the balcony of the hotel to have a cigarette. This was reported by those who were in his room at the time.

No - I read a book about him called "Killing the Dream". I learned a lot about his habits and his private life and it never mentioned smoking.
