That money is just for a marketing strategy. LA galaxy pretends to be paying all that for a very good player, but they are actually marketing their team to make soccer more popular on the US.
Even in Beckham´s best days, no one would payed all that money for any player. But you Americans are hard to impress, so they payed all that money to him, to get him on TV and all newspapers. He is not worth 250 millions as a player, but LA Galaxy thinks he is worth 250 millions as a marketing strategy.

Probably not - as a player, but as a merchandisable item definiteley.

Whatever you say about him as a player to pull off the biggest deal in sports history is a fantastic achievement. No one seems to mind when a player goes and plays in an arabian country to make some money before they retire.

If he looks like a sellout then i'll bet he really couldn't give a monkeys earning his half million pounds a week and laughing all the way to the cayman islands

No, I think he's just an attraction to get Americans into the sport the world already loves. It's the one thing that the US has always lagged behind the rest of the world.

With Beckham, however, he's getting up there in age and I hope that he'll make it 5 years to fulfill his contract.

No he is not but nor is anybody. Tell me a person who would not go for that kind of money. Good luck to him. I can't understand why everyone is so against it. I am a football supporter but still think that all top class players are mentally over paid, so what makes him so different. Look at Ballack, he is on £120,000 a week, and that also is way way ott.

Wow! Spot the Becks-haters!!
Whether he is or isn't, you cant blame him for going there - who wouldn't? Rumours are abound that Ronaldo, Figo, Davids etc are all going to follow suit so he may well give football, sorry soccer (!) in the US the kick up the **** it needs, in which case i reckon they'd look on it as being $$$'s well spent! (Rod Stewart, Steven Spielberg & J-Lo have already bought their $1,500 season tickets!)

As for the goober that reckons he cost us the game against Argentina etc - he dragged us to the World Cup in '02, made/scored the wining goal in our first game & scored the goal that got us through to the World Cup QF in '06 where no one (Rio & Hargreaves aside) played anywhere near their normal level.

Good luck to him I say!
